Jurgen Klopp has praised the efforts of Harvey Elliott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the Liverpool pair excelled in new roles.

The Reds are in the midst of their pre-season preparations and played two separate 30-minute friendlies against Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart - both games ending 1-1.

Klopp was trialing new ideas which saw certain individuals playing in unorthodox positions.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been hampered by injuries recently, occupied a false nine role.

Meanwhile Elliott has found opportunities harder to come by and spent last season away on loan at Blackburn.

The highly-rated teenager played in central midfield and Klopp was more than satisfied with what he saw.

“I don’t think Harvey had ever played that position for us, but he looked good,” he told LFC TV after the game.

“Ox you could see in the first few minutes immediately that it is an option, definitely. We will see how that goes on.

“Ibou [Konate] did really well and that’s what we expected, he looks really good in training.

“First game with all the young boys, they have really showed up in training but it is different than when you play a first-team with all the kids together in the team.

“It is tough, but no problem – life is tough and we have to give them the opportunity to get tested in these kinds of games. We do that and now we carry on.”

Klopp is biding his time when it comes to reintroducing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, with both men returning from long-term injuries.

Joel Matip has made his return whilst Ibrahima Konate played for the Reds for the first time.

Klopp doesn’t expect to see Van Dijk and Gomez feature in the club’s next friendly on Friday however as he eases them back in gradually.

“They have looked really good in training and yesterday was the first day where they did very complex things, usually it is either offensive or defensive and stuff like this.

“We have to get there, step by step, but I don’t expect them for Friday.”

Reports in Spain have also suggested that Liverpool have looked to make moves for Saul Niguez.

Diario Sport reports that a bid of €40m (£34.5) plus either Xherdan Shaqiri or Jordan Henderson has been lodged.

Klopp has lost Gini Wijnaldum this summer and will be looking to bolster his midfield ranks with Henderson’s contract talks also showing no progress thus far.

Stuttgart Ricemen go 1-2 in the American Legion Junior Major State Tournament

Stuttgart competed in the American Legion’s Junior Major State Tournament over the weekend in what proved to be the end of their 2021 season.

After an opening-round loss to Sheridan on Friday, the Ricemen bounced back with a win over Little Rock on Saturday afternoon before being eliminated from the tournament on Monday with a loss to the Texarkana Bulldogs.

Stuttgart’s state tournament was played at The University of Central Arkansas’ Bear Stadium.

Game One: Sheridan 21 Stuttgart 0

The Stuttgart Ricemen played in the first round of the Junior Major State Tournament on Friday against Sheridan, losing 21-0. Sheridan scored 11 runs in the first three innings before exploding for 10 runs in the top of the fourth to end the game.

Jack Reinhart drew the start for Stuttgart on the mound and lasted 2.0 innings, allowing ten runs, five of them earned. Reinhart walked three batters and was hampered by six Ricemen errors in the field. Three other pitchers combined for 2.0 innings.

In total, the Ricemen were able to muster only two hits for the game with Jatavian Gaddy and Hayden McCarley each recording singles. By comparison, Sheridan pounded out 13 hits and drew seven walks against Ricemen pitching. Sheridan also had three batters walked due to being hit by pitches.

Matthew Hoskyn earlier this season.

Game Two: Stuttgart 11 Little Rock 8

Facing a must-win situation, the Ricemen played Little Rock’s Junior Legion team on Saturday afternoon.

Dylan Duncan started the game for Stuttgart but lasted only 1.0 inning as he allowed three runs in the top of the first inning.

None of the runs allowed by Duncan were earned as the Ricemen defense committed three errors in the frame. Fortunately for Duncan, Stuttgart’s offense scored five runs in the top of the second inning, giving them a 6-3 lead.

Holding the 6-3 lead, the Ricemen turned to rising junior Jatavian Gaddy on the mound. Gaddy delivered a 6.0 inning performance that included a season-high 101 pitches. Gaddy struck out five and walked four.

Taylor Vose led the Ricemen offensively with a three-hit game that included four RBIs and two runs scored. Vose was joined in the multi-hit column by both Matthew Hoskyn and Hayden McCarley who each delivered a pair of hits while Gaddy also recorded a three-hit day. Hoskyn’s two for three day included three RBIs.

With the win, Stuttgart moved on in the loser’s bracket to Monday afternoon where they were paired with Texarkana.

Game Three: Texarkana 20 Stuttgart 8

Following their win over Little Rock, the Ricemen turned their attention to another perennial baseball power in the state, Texarkana.

Although Stuttgart outhit Texarkana 10-9 in the game, a season-high eight Ricemen errors proved to be too much for the team to overcome.

Four pitchers combined to throw in the game for Stuttgart with Texarkana tallying nine hits, ten walks, and five batters hit by pitches. This was in addition to the eight Ricemen errors.

As a result, 12 of Texarkana’s 20 runs were scored as unearned.

Three Ricemen turned in multi-hit games with Landon Melnychuk leading the way with three hits. Taylor Vose had a two for five game, raising his batting average to .500 for the tournament.

The loss concludes Stuttgart’s season as the Ricemen finish 2021 with a record of 6-5-1.

Nina Ayerle Von 03.07.2021 - 08:00 Uhr
